The third-generation Luisa Ventilator device provides life-supporting ventilation and high flow oxygen therapy for patients in the US.

RT’s Three Key Takeaways:

  1. Integrated High Flow Therapy: The LUISA ventilator provides high flow oxygen therapy alongside standard pressure and volume modes, allowing for transitioned care from hospital to home.
  2. Extended Battery Life: The portable device offers up to 18 hours of use through a combination of internal and external batteries, facilitating increased patient mobility.
  3. Regulatory Authorization: The device is currently available in the US under an FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for life-supporting ventilation.

Movair and Löwenstein Medical have partnered to provide the Luisa ventilator to the US market, offering a third-generation life-supporting device that includes high flow oxygen therapy, according to Movair.

The portable ventilator is designed for both invasive and non-invasive use, supporting all standard volume, pressure, and mouthpiece ventilation modes. Movair, a respiratory technology company based in Austin, Texas, is the exclusive sales, clinical, and service partner for the device in the US.

High flow therapy (HFT) delivered through the device can provide a flow rate of 5-60 lpm to meet or exceed a patient’s inspiratory flow demand. This therapy, which has traditionally been used in critical care and emergency departments, is now available for home ventilator patients to help reduce the work of breathing and improve oxygenation. The device can deliver a high flow blend of air and oxygen through a nasal cannula, which may lead to improved secretion clearance and increased ease in activities of daily living, according to the company.

The LUISA features a 10-inch angled touchscreen and does not require adapters for different circuits. It is designed to be lightweight at approximately 8 pounds and can be used in vertical or horizontal positions, mounted on a wheelchair, or carried in a bag.

For patients requiring personalized therapy, the device utilizes a TTV-VAPS-AE mode, which stands for targeted tidal volume, volume-assured pressure support, and auto EPAP. This mode includes settings designed to improve patient comfort and compliance.

The device provides up to 18 hours of battery life by utilizing a six-hour internal battery and two optional external batteries. Connectivity features allow healthcare providers to download personalized therapy data and customized reports to manage patient care and ensure they are maximizing their therapy.

Maintenance for the system consists of routine filter changes and device cleaning. The Luisa has been authorized by the FDA under an EUA for the duration of the emergency declaration but has not yet been cleared or approved by the agency. US federal law restricts the sale of this device to a physician or by a physician’s order.
