The NKV-550 Series Ventilator System allows clinicians to transition between therapy modes and manage patients from outside isolation rooms.

RT’s Three Key Takeaways:

  1. Multimodal Therapy Transition: The system allows for transitions between invasive ventilation, noninvasive ventilation, and high-flow oxygen therapy without the need to change devices or circuits.
  2. Remote Patient Management: A secondary user interface called Protective Control enables clinicians to adjust ventilator settings and monitor alarms from outside an isolation room to minimize exposure to contagious diseases.
  3. Lung Protection Tools: The platform includes a suite of applications designed to support the open-lung approach through automated recruitment maneuvers and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration.

Nihon Kohden has debuted its NKV-550 Series Ventilator System, which provides applications for critical care settings for patients ranging from neonates through adults. The ventilator features an integrated touchscreen and an interface designed to help clinicians manage respiratory support needs.

The NKV-550 was developed to transition between invasive ventilation, noninvasive ventilation, and high-flow oxygen therapy, according the company. This design allows respiratory therapists to respond to patient needs without changing devices or breathing circuits, which may reduce material costs and training requirements.

“Every product we bring to market is designed to simplify workflow for clinicians and benefit patients,” said Yasuhiro Yoshitake, president and CEO of Nihon Kohden America. “We saw a tremendous need in the respiratory market for a comprehensive ventilator that could respond to any patient situation while also providing excellent usability using modern technology.”

A feature called Protective Control provides a second graphic user interface (GUI) that can be placed outside the isolation room of a contagious patient. This allows healthcare workers to view monitors, adjust ventilation and alarm settings, and pause audio alarms while remaining outside the room, as long as the patient is within sight through a window. According to the company, this feature helps protect clinicians from biological hazards by reducing the time spent donning protective equipment before responding to an infectious patient. Data provided by Nihon Kohden indicates that an estimated 42 healthcare workers per million employed die each year from infections acquired at work.

The system includes the Gentle Lung suite of applications, which are tools designed for the open-lung approach to ventilation. These applications include a Recruitability Assessment App to determine if lungs are recruitable and a PEEP Titration App that indicates the lowest PEEP providing the highest lung compliance. The ventilator also features a Transpulmonary Pressure App to help individualize lung protective strategies.

The NKV-550 uses an app-based design that allows clinicians to customize screen configurations to fit specific workflows. The system is also capable of transferring ventilation data to hospital information systems for charting and analytics. It connects to Nihon Kohden Life Scope G9 and BSM-6000 series monitors using a communication cable, according to the company.
