Remote respiratory services enable Veterans to receive guided therapy and specialist consultations from home.
RT’s Three Key Takeaways:
- Virtual Specialist Access: TelePulmonology connects patients to respiratory therapists and pulmonologists via secure videoconferencing, removing travel barriers for those in remote areas.
- Home-Based Rehabilitation: The program facilitates biweekly sessions focused on breathing techniques and physical activity to strengthen lung and cardiovascular health.
- Coordinated Care Management: Respiratory therapists collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to manage test results and treatment plans through integrated digital healthcare portals.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is utilizing TelePulmonology to provide specialized respiratory care to veterans from their homes, allowing for consistent treatment without the burden of travel, according to a report from VA News.
The program connects patients with pulmonologists, respiratory therapists, and other lung health professionals through VA Video Connect, a secure videoconferencing application. This virtual model is available in certain VA healthcare systems and is designed to support veterans who live far from specialists or those requiring long-term recovery.
Air Force veteran Robert Ordoyne, who was hospitalized earlier this year with coronary hypertension, began using the service to manage his recovery. Coronary hypertension is a condition that places added strain on both the heart and lungs, requiring ongoing monitoring and therapy. Following his inpatient care, his healthcare team suggested TelePulmonology to avoid the fatigue associated with frequent trips to a clinic.
“It makes it a lot easier for me. Not having to drive across town twice a week has been a big help,” said Ordoyne, a veteran, in a news release.
During biweekly sessions, respiratory therapists review patient progress, adjust treatment plans, and lead guided breathing and movement exercises. These exercises are designed to strengthen the lungs and support cardiovascular health. By performing these routines at home, patients can maintain a consistent schedule and recover at an individualized pace.
The TelePulmonology framework also facilitates interdisciplinary care coordination. The respiratory therapist works with other VA specialists to manage test results, recommendations, and follow-up appointments. Patients can manage these appointments and review results through My HealtheVet, the VA online portal.
Ordoyne, who now meets with his therapist twice a week, noted that the virtual format keeps his recovery on track.
“If it’s available, give it a try. It saves you time and keeps your care on track,” said Ordoyne, in a news release.
The VA encourages veterans to speak with their healthcare teams to determine if TelePulmonology is available in their region and appropriate for their specific clinical needs.
