US Measles Cases Top 3,000 as HHS Disputes Reported Measles Deaths

The CDC is reporting a total of 3,134 confirmed measles cases in the United States, as per a September 4 update from the agency. The latest update pushes 2026’s 35-year record for measles cases even higher, as it eclipsed 2025’s total of 2,289 cases in June of this year.
The CDC reports 38 new outbreaks in 2026 with 95% of confirmed cases (2,969 of 3,134) being outbreak-associated.
Four US states (Arkansas, Mississippi, Nevada, and New Hampshire) remain measles-free, but the remaining 46 have reported a total of 3,118 cases, plus 16 cases in international travelers.
South Carolina (670) and Utah (526) have reported the most cases, but six other states have reported 100 or more cases: Pennsylvania (557), Texas (191), Virginia (178), Florida (144), Wisconsin (112), and Arizona (110).
According to Pennsylvania Department of Health data, the state’s total has surged from 12 total cases in March to 565 total as of September 4, a 4600% increase. Two measles-related deaths were reported by the Pennsylvania Dept of Health in August.
Federal Officials Dispute Measles Death Reports
The federal government has disputed two measles-related deaths reported by Pennsylvania. The CDC measles database lists an *asterisk* under the US Total Deaths section of its Sept 4 update.
According to Reuters, DHHS secretary Robert Kennedy allegedly asked the CDC director to remove two measles deaths reported by Pennsylvania from the CDC database after they were originally included. Erica Schwartz, who was appointed CDC director on Aug 5, 2026, implemented the removal, Reuters reports.

US Measles Cases Reach 2,777, Continue Climb

According August 20 data from the CDC, 2,777 measles cases have been reported in the United States, rising over 33% in the last two months. The agency says 2,761 of the cases were reported in 46 states, plus 16 cases reported among international visitors.
Only four US states have not reported cases: Arkansas, Mississippi, Nevada, and New Hampshire.
South Carolina and Utah remain the states to report the most cases [670 (SC) and 522 (UT) respectively], but five other states have reported 100 or more cases [Pennsylvania (371), Texas (190), Virginia (176), Florida (142), and Arizona (110)].
A total of 93% of cases have been reported in individuals with unvaccinated or unknown vaccination status, according to the CDC.

Confirmed measles cases in the United States in 2026 have reached 2,318, surpassing the 2025’s total of 2,289 cases in less than 8 months. The 2026 total is the most in 35 years, since 9,643 cases were reported in 1991.

The 2026 total now surpasses 2025 as the eighth worst in US history since 1985.
2026 currently sits just 504 cases behind 1985 for the seventh most cases, with current reporting rates suggesting it will surpass that number before end of year.
The measles virus was declared “eliminated” in the United States in the year 2000.

The agency reports that there have been 35 new outbreaks reported in 2026, and 93% of confirmed cases (2,153 of 2,318) are outbreak-associated.
The majority of 2026 cases have occurred in South Carolina and Utah, which have reported totals of 670
(SC) and 522 (UT) respectively. South Carolina declared its 2025-26 state outbreak “ended” on April 27, 2026 with 997 infections, 21 hospitalizations, and zero related deaths.
Infectious disease experts lamented the milestone.
“This is a grim milestone and one that could have been avoided, as we have a safe and highly effective measles vaccine that is widely available in the United States,” said William Moss, MD, MPH, is a professor in the departments of Epidemiology; International Health; and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “It is tragic that misinformation about the vaccine is getting in the way of keeping people safe.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting 2,073 confirmed measles cases in 2026, according to a June 12 update by the agency.
A total of 2,063 cases have been reported in 39 states, plus 10 cases reported among international visitors to the US, the CDC says.
There have been 30 new outbreaks reported in 2026, and 93% of confirmed cases (1,929 of 2,073) are outbreak-associated, according to the CDC.
