The ASL 5000 simulates spontaneous breathing for patients ranging from neonatal to adult to accelerate respiratory device development.

RT’s Three Key Takeaways:

  1. Versatile Patient Modeling: The system simulates neonatal through adult patients with various pulmonary conditions, including COPD, ARDS, and fibrosis.
  2. Spontaneous Breathing Capability: The simulator can breathe spontaneously while being ventilated and is compatible with any ventilator or ventilation mode.
  3. Regulatory Standard Alignment: The device meets or exceeds international standards for testing critical care, anesthetic, home care, and emergency ventilators.

IngMar Medical has developed the ASL 5000 Breathing Simulator to assist in the development and testing of ventilators, CPAP machines, and aerosol drug delivery devices, according to the company. The instrument simulates a full range of patients, from neonatal to adult, and can breathe spontaneously even while being ventilated.

The simulator is compatible with any ventilator and any ventilator mode. It is designed to help researchers and engineers save time and gain better control over testing protocols by providing repeatable breath patterns. The system can simulate various diseases affecting pulmonary dynamics, such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), pneumothorax, and fibrosis.

“The ASL 5000 is the world’s most sophisticated breathing simulator, and capable of simulating the full range of patients – neonatal to adult,” IngMar Medical says.

The ASL 5000 features a 512 Hz sampling rate to provide granular feedback across various breath rates. It includes more than 100 parameters for the analysis of the entire patient breath cycle. The system is calibrated to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards, and flow is calculated from piston position to reduce uncertainties associated with external flow meters.

In addition to product development, the simulator is used for educational purposes in healthcare settings. It is compatible with the Laerdal SimMan 3G series manikins and can be managed through the LLEAP platform. For specialized applications, the company offers several modules, including the Simulator Bypass and Leak Valve Module (SBLVM) for simulating leaks and the Cylinder Temperature Controller (CTC) for managing humidified patient circuits.

The device meets requirements for test lungs specified in several International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, including ISO 80601-2-12 for critical care ventilators and ISO 10651-6 for home care ventilator support devices. IngMar Medical is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and its calibration lab is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
