Val Kilmer, the actor best known for his roles in Top Gun, Tombstone, Heat, Batman Forever, and The Doors, passed away Tuesday at the age of 65 after a battle with pneumonia, according to multiple media reports, including The Associated Press.
According to the AP, Kilmer’s daughter announced his death in an email to news media on Tuesday night, reporting the cause as pneumonia.
Kilmer died Tuesday night in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends, his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, said in an email to The Associated Press. Kilmer died from pneumonia. He had recovered after a 2014 throat cancer diagnosis that required two tracheotomies.

Most recently, Kilmer reprised his famous role as “Iceman” opposite Tom Cruise in 2021’s Top Gun: Maverick, where he was limited in ability to speak. According to the Daily Mail, Kilmer had lost his voice due to his throat cancer but the film employed artificial intelligence to regenerate Kilmer’s voice so some of his words could be heard out loud.
Kilmer’s filmography also includes starring roles in dozens of 80s, 90s, and 2000’s films such as Real Genius, Willow, Thunderheart, The Ghost and the Darkness, The Prince of Egypt, The Saint, Deja Vu, and Alexander.
