Comparatively, mumps cases are at their lowest number in the last 25 years, according to CDC data. In 2024, a total of 357 cases were reported. The fewest cases reported in a single year occurred in 2021, with only 189 cases. The highest case count in the last quarter century was 2006, when 6,584 cases were reported in the United States.
The CDC recommends vaccination as the best prevention strategy, encouraging all Americans to be vaccinated via two doses of the mumps vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella [MMR] vaccine).
