A new study will assess associations between bronchiectasis exacerbations and periodontal disease and whether periodontal treatment can reduce attacks, according to an article in BMJ Open.

Summary of the Study:

  1. Study Objective — Researchers will test whether periodontal treatment (scaling, root planing, and photodynamic therapy) reduces inflammation, halitosis, and harmful microorganisms linked to bronchiectasis exacerbations over 3 months.
  2. Methods — 182 patients with both periodontal disease and bronchiectasis will be randomized into two treatment groups, with saliva, nasal lavage, and sputum samples analyzed for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, along with cytokine levels and oral health measures.
  3. Expected Outcomes — Both treatment groups are anticipated to show improved oral and respiratory health, with greater benefits in the photodynamic therapy group, potentially reducing long-term exacerbations and hospitalizations similar to findings in COPD patients.
