CVS and Walgreens are expanding walk-in access, multi-vaccine scheduling, and respiratory illness testing ahead of peak viral activity.
RT’s Three Key Takeaways:
- Expanded Community Access: Retail pharmacy chains nationwide have begun administering updated 2026-2027 influenza vaccines through both walk-in visits and digital scheduling platforms.
- Multiplex Diagnostic Services: Select retail clinics and pharmacies are pairing immunizations with combination single-swab tests that can detect influenza A, influenza B, and COVID-19.
- High Immunization Intent: Consumer survey data indicate that 63% of US adults plan to receive an influenza shot this season, aligning with vaccination intent observed over the prior two years.
Major US pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens have launched their nationwide influenza vaccination efforts for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season, expanding outpatient access to preventive immunizations, diagnostic testing, and early outpatient treatments.
CVS Health has rolled out updated seasonal flu vaccines across its CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide. Concurrently, Walgreens announced in a news release that flu shots are now available across its retail pharmacies for individuals aged 3 years and older. Both organizations are offering walk-in availability alongside digital scheduling that accommodates group bookings for up to four individuals at a time.
The CDC recommends that nearly all individuals aged 6 months and older receive an annual influenza vaccine, noting that September and October represent optimal timeframes for immunization prior to peak viral circulation. According to CDC guidance cited by CVS Health, annual vaccination remains one of the primary clinical interventions for reducing severe flu-related illness and secondary respiratory complications.
“Getting vaccinated is one of the simplest and most effective steps people can take to help protect themselves and those around them during flu season,” said Amy Compton-Phillips, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer, CVS Health, in a news release. “As respiratory viruses continue to circulate each year, it’s important that people and families have convenient access to trusted healthcare professionals who can answer questions, provide recommended vaccinations and help them stay healthy throughout the season.”
Consumer Vaccination Trends and Timing
According to a national consumer survey commissioned by CVS Health in July 2026, 63% of US respondents reported that they intend to receive a flu vaccine during the current season. This rate matches the 63% intention level recorded in 2025 and is comparable to the 62% reported in 2024.
Walgreens stated in its announcement that the chain is boosting pharmacy staffing levels to shorten wait times and support clinical consultations following recent severe respiratory illness patterns.
“Last year was one of the worst flu seasons in more than 25 years, yet every year I see people wait until the virus is already spreading before getting vaccinated,” said Rick Gates, chief pharmacy officer, Walgreens. “Getting vaccinated early is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and your family. At Walgreens, we’re making it easy with walk-in availability, convenient scheduling and, for most patients with insurance, no out-of-pocket cost for a flu vaccine.”
Integrated Diagnostic and Treatment Services
Beyond preventive immunizations, community retail sites are expanding point-of-care diagnostic capabilities for acute respiratory presentations. Participating CVS Pharmacy locations are deploying single-swab combination tests capable of differentiating among influenza A, influenza B, and COVID-19, according to the company’s release. MinuteClinic locations nationwide are also providing multiplex testing for the three viral pathogens.
In 12 states—California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming—pharmacists are authorized to assess eligible patients presenting with respiratory symptoms and prescribe targeted antiviral treatments during the same clinical encounter.
“Patients want healthcare that is easy to access and fits into their busy lives,” said Sid Tenneti, senior vice president and interim president, pharmacy and consumer wellness, CVS Health, in a news release. “Whether someone is looking to get vaccinated, needs help understanding symptoms, or is seeking testing and treatment options, CVS Pharmacy is committed to providing connected, convenient care in the communities we serve.”
Co-Administration of Respiratory Vaccines
Both retail providers highlighted the capacity to co-administer multiple CDC-recommended vaccines during a single patient appointment. In addition to seasonal influenza immunizations, eligible patients can receive vaccines for COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), hepatitis B, measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), and shingles.
According to company statements, most CDC-recommended preventive vaccines are covered with no out-of-pocket cost under private insurance plans and Medicare Part B. Both retailers have also integrated loyalty program incentives to encourage timely immunization before viral transmission surges in late autumn and winter.
