Zepto Life Technology has introduced FungiFlex Pneumocystis jirovecii and the FungiFlex Mold Plus Panel, expanding its menu of plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) liquid biopsy assays.
RT’s Three Key Takeaways:
- Expanded Test Menu: Zepto Life Technology has added two new plasma-based assays to its FungiFlex line, allowing for targeted detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii or a combined panel for both mold and pneumonia.
- High-Risk Patient Focus: The new tests are designed for immunocompromised individuals, such as transplant recipients and those with hematologic malignancies, who are at the highest risk for these infections.
- Rapid Results: Performed through a CLIA-certified laboratory, the liquid biopsy assays provide species-level identification from plasma with a turnaround time of less than 24 hours.

The new options allow clinicians to order targeted P. jirovecii testing or a combined detection of mold and P. jirovecii based on the specific clinical question, according to the company. These infections frequently occur in the same high-risk patient populations, including transplant recipients, patients with hematologic malignancies, and other individuals with compromised immune systems.
The expansion of the testing menu was driven by requests from physicians and clinical laboratories who often evaluate both conditions during an initial diagnostic workup.
“The request for Pneumocystis testing came up over and over again in conversation,” said Hannah Zhang, chief executive officer of Zepto Life Technology, in a news release. “This launch is a direct response to that feedback. We want the FungiFlex test menu to reflect how fungal infections are evaluated in real-world clinical practice.”
The FungiFlex assays are designed to provide minimally invasive identification of fungal pathogens directly from plasma. By utilizing cfDNA, the tests offer species-level detection without the need for more invasive diagnostic procedures.
Testing is performed through Zepto Life Technology’s CLIA-certified reference laboratory. Results are typically reported in less than 24 hours after the sample is received, providing rapid data for healthcare providers managing critically ill patients.
The company plans to continue expanding the FungiFlex menu with additional targeted assays to address unmet needs in fungal diagnostics. Additionally, the company is advancing its MDx Platform to bring onsite, sample-to-result liquid biopsy diagnostic capabilities to hospital laboratories in the future.
