The Nihon Kohden NKV-440 Ventilator allows for transitions between invasive and noninvasive ventilation and high flow oxygen therapy in a single portable unit.

RT’s Three Key Takeaways:

  1. Multi-Patient Versatility: The NKV-440 ventilator transitions between invasive ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, and high flow oxygen therapy for patients ranging from neonates to adults.
  2. Internal Turbine Technology: An integrated HEPA-filtered turbine allows the system to operate without compressed air, facilitating patient mobility and providing “comprehensive” respiratory support.
  3. Lung Protection Tools: The system includes specialized recruitment assessment applications designed to help clinicians determine lung recruitability and optimize protective ventilation strategies.

Nihon Kohden America offers the NKV-440 ventilator system, an FDA-cleared device designed for use across neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations.

The system, previously offered through the company subsidiary OrangeMed, is now available to a wider range of healthcare providers. It is designed to address challenges such as staff shortages and budget constraints by providing multiple respiratory modalities in one unit, according to a news release from the company.

“Healthcare providers need reliable, easy-to-use ventilators that can handle various patient needs without the need to switch devices,” said Roy Sakai, president of Nihon Kohden America. “The NKV-440 offers “comprehensive” respiratory support in one compact, portable unit.”

The NKV-440 features an internal HEPA-filtered turbine, which removes the requirement for external compressed air and increases mobility within the facility. The system provides up to five hours of operation using hot-swappable batteries and includes a trolley with an oxygen cylinder holder.

For lung protection, the ventilator includes “Gentle Lung” recruitment tools and a Recruitment Assessment (RA) application. These features allow clinicians to assess lung recruitability and perform standardized stepwise recruitment maneuvers and PEEP titration to determine optimal compliance.

The device also includes an integrated pneumatic nebulizer that allows clinicians to sync aerosol delivery with inhalation, exhalation, or continuous phases to increase efficacy. The system uses a customizable, application-based graphic user interface to streamline clinical workflows and help staff quickly acclimate to ventilator functions.
