A new portable respiratory device from Philips Respironics called the CoughAssist T70 can clear secretions from the lungs by shifting air pressure to simulate a deep, natural cough.

Air is delivered through a facemask, a mouthpiece or through a simple adapter that allows the device to function with an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, rather than a suction catheter.

The device gradually applies positive air pressure to the airway and then rapidly shifts to negative air pressure, which simulates a cough and clears the airway.

The new method aims to reduce patient discomfort and may help decrease hospital readmissions by minimizing the risk of pneumonia and infections, according to its manufacturer, Philips Respironics.

The CoughAssist T70 can be used in both hospital and in-home settings and is equipped with a simple user interface and new data management software to improve treatment results.

The new device is easy to use, portable and “more sensitive to the user’s breathing pattern for a more natural treatment,” said Jay Vreeland of Philips Home Healthcare Solutions.

Features include a new Cough-Trak system that allows patients to synchronize treatment with their own breathing patterns and a user-friendly digital interface with preset prescriptions that simplify setup and use.

Accessories include a hose clip, air filter, adult mask, patient circuit, SD card, AC power cord and a detachable lithium ion battery that allows up to four treatments on a single charge.
