Three More States Report First Measles Case

Louisiana, Missouri and Virginia all reported their first 2025 cases of measles on Sunday, taking the total number of US states that have reported cases to 27 nationwide.

  • Louisiana’s Department of Health notified the public of its first case of measles on April 19 in an adult whose exposure is reportedly linked to international travel.
  • Missouri reported its first measles case in a child with exposure during international travel on April 19.
  • Virginia reported its first case of measles on April 19, in a child who was exposed to the virus during international travel, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

The additional cases were not included in this week’s national update issued by the CDC, which reported a total of 800 cases nationwide, as of Friday April 18. (See update below.)



Measles Outbreaks Declared in Nine States as Cases Reach 800

The CDC is reporting a total of 800 measles cases have been confirmed in 24 states, as of data available April 17, 2025.

Outbreaks (defined as three cases or more three with a shared infection source) have been declared in nine states: California, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Cases continue to be driven by outbreaks in Texas (597), New Mexico (63) and Kansas (37).

Reported cases in 2025 have now exceeded 2024’s total by 515 infections, or an increase of 180.7%. (800 vs 285)

United States Measles Cases Reach 712

Per an April 11 update by the CDC, confirmed measles cases in the United States have crossed 700 and now sit at 712 in a total of 24 states.

States reporting cases for the first time this week include Arkansas (2), Hawaii (1), and Indiana (6).

  • Arkansas reported its first case of measles since 2018 on April 10, and a second case later that same day. Both cases, confirmed in children, were exposed to the virus during travel out of state, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.
  • Hawaii’s Department of Health notified the public of its first case of measles on April 8 in an unvaccinated child who had recently returned to Oahu from international travel with its parents.
  • Indiana reported its first case of measles in a child on April 7, and five additional cases on April 9 (3 children and 2 adults).

The majority of cases remain in Texas, which now has 541 confirmed cases (as of April 11).

United States Measles Cases Now Over 600

The CDC says a total of 607 confirmed measles cases have been reported by 21 states, as of data available April 3, 2025.

Cases are being driven by outbreaks in Texas (481), New Mexico (54) and now Kansas, which has reported 24 infections. (See the map below for states reporting cases.)

Reported cases in 2025 have now exceeded 2024’s total by 322 infections, or an increase of 113%. (607 vs 285)

United States Measles Cases Approach 400

As of March 20, 2025, a total of 378 confirmed measles cases were reported by 17 states and New York City, according to the CDC’s weekly measles count.

New states reporting cases in the last week include Kansas, Michigan and Ohio. (See remaining 14 states reporting cases in the March 17th update below.)

The cases are being driven by outbreaks in Texas (309 cases), New Mexico (42) and Oklahoma (4). The CDC reports 90% of US cases are associated with these outbreaks.

In 2024, a total of 285 measles cases were reported nationwide.



United States Measles Cases Top 300

The CDC says a total of 301 confirmed measles cases have been reported by 14 states nationwide, as of March 13, 2025.

The states reporting confirmed cases include: Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York State, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, and Washington. (New York City is included in the count and considered its own jurisdiction by the CDC.)

There have been 3 outbreaks (defined as 3 or more related cases) reported in 2025, and 93% of cases (280 of 301) are outbreak-associated, according to the CDC.

According to CDC data, 229 of the confirmed cases (76%) have occurred in individuals age 19 and younger, and 95% have occurred in persons unvaccinated or with unknown vaccination status.

Fatalities

There have been two measles-related deaths in 2025, one confirmed death of a school-aged child in Texas, and a second death under investigation in a New Mexico adult who tested positive for measles post-mortem.
