The FreeStyle Comfort from Caire includes smart delivery technology and an ergonomic design to support respiratory patients.

RT’s Three Key Takeaways:

  1. Smart Delivery Features: The device utilizes technologies like automatic titration and pulse delivery to ensure patients maintain oxygen saturation during various activity levels.
  2. Ergonomic Design: Weighing five pounds and featuring a curved silhouette, the unit is designed to improve patient comfort and mobility following hospital discharge.
  3. Clinical Reliability: The system offers five flow settings and a reliability rate of over 99% out of the box, supported by a three-year warranty on the device and sieve beds.

The Caire FreeStyle Comfort is a portable oxygen concentrator (POC) designed to help patients resume daily activities following hospital discharge through smart delivery technology and an ergonomic design.

The device offers five settings and delivers up to 1050 mL of oxygen per minute, allowing it to cover a broad range of prescriptions as patient needs change. Weighing 2.3 kg (5 lbs) and standing 25.4 cm tall, the unit features a body-skimming, curved silhouette intended to reduce swinging and bouncing during movement, according to Caire.

“The FreeStyle Comfort has the power to let patients stay out all day long with greater flexibility to increase flow rates as prescriptions change,” Caire says on its website.

The system incorporates several smart technologies to ensure patient saturation. These include autoSAT, which provides automatic titration to the patient’s respiratory rate; autoDose, which delivers an automatic pulse if no breath is detected; and UltraSense, a sensitive breath detection technology. Additionally, the device is compatible with myCaire, a telehealth solution for remote monitoring.

For patient convenience, the unit operates at 39.9 dBA, which is a sound level slightly more than a whisper and less than a refrigerator. It features a large-font multi-color LCD display and a glow-in-the-dark keypad. Depending on the battery pack selected, the device can last up to 8 or 16 hours and meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for commercial airline travel.

The design includes sieve bed technology intended to reduce required maintenance. Caire reported a reliability rate of greater than 99% out of the box and provides a three-year warranty on both the device and the sieve beds.

The FreeStyle Comfort package includes the portable oxygen concentrator, a carrying bag, a battery pack, power supplies for AC and DC input, and the manufacturer warranty. A prescription is required to purchase the device for use in the healthcare environment.
