The Werfen Gem Premier 7000 with IQM3 is a point-of-care blood gas analyzer that offers hemolysis detection.

RT’s Three Key Takeaways:

  1. Hemolysis Detection: The new system is the first point-of-care blood gas analyzer to flag hemolysis in 45 seconds to help reduce preanalytical errors.
  2. Error Reduction: Hemolysis accounts for up to 70% of all preanalytical errors and can falsely increase potassium levels by as much as 152%.
  3. Regulatory Clearance: The system received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and was introduced at a major laboratory medicine meeting.

Werfen has introduced the Gem Premier 7000 with Intelligent Quality Management 3 (iQM3), the first point-of-care blood gas testing system to feature hemolysis detection, according to the company.

Hemolysis is the primary source of preanalytical error, accounting for up to 70% of all such errors, according to Werfen. It occurs when red blood cell membranes rupture, causing cellular contents to leak into the surrounding fluid. While prevalent throughout various healthcare settings, hemolysis is not visible in whole blood and often goes unrecognized. This can negatively impact patient care by elevating potassium results by up to 152%.

The Gem Premier 7000 utilizes patented technology for hemolysis detection based on a photometric measurement of whole blood. The system flags hemolysis in 45 seconds, helping inform patient management decisions in acute care settings such as the intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, operating room, and emergency department.

In addition to hemolysis, the iQM3 technology ensures sample quality by continuously monitoring the analytical process before, during, and after each measurement. The system is designed to detect, correct, and document common preanalytical errors, including clots and bubbles, to provide quality-assured results, the company says.

The platform features a customizable menu of measured analytes, including pH, pCO2, pO2, electrolytes, glucose, lactate, hematocrit, and various hemoglobin fractions. The system utilizes the Gem PAK, an all-in-one cartridge designed for advanced simplicity at the point of care.
