New research indicates that discussing the risks of secondhand smoke to animals could serve as a motivator for human smoking cessation.

Veterinarians who discuss the dangers of secondhand smoke with pet owners may provide a new pathway for human smoking cessation, according to a study published in the Journal of Shelter Medicine and Community Animal Health.
The research, led by Elizabeth Rozanski, professor of small animal clinical sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, and then-graduate student Nichole Smith, analyzed 168 pet urine samples from four Massachusetts communities. Researchers used a test to measure cotinine, a marker of environmental tobacco smoke, in the urine.
The results showed that 10% of pets tested positive for cotinine overall. However, exposure rates were closely tied to socioeconomic status. In the lowest-income community, 27% of pets tested positive, while 12% of pets in lower-middle income towns showed exposure. Just 1% of pets in upper-middle income towns were positive, and no pets from high-income communities tested positive.
“There’s no way that secondhand smoke is good for pets,” said Rozanski, professor of small animal clinical sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.
She noted that while specific evidence linking smoking to specific animal diseases is still being gathered, the assumption is that animals face similar risks to humans, including respiratory issues, diabetes, and various cancers.
The study aligns with the One Health Initiative, which emphasizes that animal, human, and environmental health are entwined. According to the research, an earlier study found that up to 50% of pet owners would try to decrease or eliminate their pet’s exposure to second-hand smoke if they knew the risks.
Rozanski suggested that veterinarians should be cognizant of these risks, particularly when serving lower-income areas where homes may be smaller and smoke exposure more concentrated. Documenting this exposure can lead to discussions about smoking cessation and the sharing of resources to help owners quit, which may help bridge the lifespan gap between different socioeconomic communities.
“Your dog wants you to be around as long as possible,” said Rozanski. “We know that smoking will limit your lifespan—I’m sure nobody wants to do that to their dog.”
