Medical organizations urged members of Congress this week to reject legislation that would exempt certain cigars, including flavored ones, from FDA regulation, reports MedPage Today.

The American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and 38 other major public health and physician groups signed off on the letter, which was sent to members of the Senate on Thursday and members of the House of Representatives earlier in the week.

It charged that the exemption would, “undermine the science-based process created by the Tobacco Control Act for determining the appropriate level of oversight of tobacco products.”
