The NBA’s San Antonio Spurs are reporting their second-year center Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his shoulder. The reigning NBA rookie of the year, Wembanyama (21), will likely miss the rest of the league’s regular season, according to the team.

According to ESPN.com, after returning from the league’s All-Star Game, Wembanyama told the team’s medical staff that “his arm didn’t feel completely normal.” The team scheduled testing for him and discovered the blood clot.

DVT complications can include pulmonary embolism (PE), a potentially life-threatening condition when a clot in the leg (or other body area) breaks free and becomes lodged in a pulmonary blood vessel, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Other NBA players have been afflicted with blood clots in recent years, including NBA Hall of Famer Chris Bosh, who retired from the league in 2016 after recurring pulmonary emboli.

The Spurs are optimistic Wembanyama will make a full recovery and return to the court next season, NBA.com reports.
