To facilitate the recruitment process, the FDA is publishing two Federal Register notices: one seeking qualified scientific, technical, and professional voting members across committees with current or anticipated openings, and a companion notice seeking consumer representatives to ensure public perspectives are included in deliberations.

Advisory committees serve as a foundation of the agency’s regulatory review process. These panels convene specialists, including physicians, researchers, biostatisticians, patient advocates, and consumer representatives, to evaluate evidence on medical devices, drugs, biologics, vaccines, and other regulated healthcare products. The panels provide independent guidance that assists the FDA in reaching regulatory determinations on safety and efficacy.
According to the agency, candidates are being recruited for vacancies across multiple specialty areas, such as medical devices, cardiovascular medicine, oncology, neurology, and genetics. Prospective applicants can initiate nominations through the centralized FDA Advisory Committee Membership Nomination portal.
Qualifications and Nomination Timelines
Nominees for scientific, technical, and professional voting seats must show subject-matter expertise relevant to one or more advisory committees, the capacity to evaluate technical and scientific data, an understanding of relevant public health issues, and the ability to offer objective advice.
Candidates for consumer representative roles must demonstrate an affiliation with or active role in community-based or consumer organizations, along with the ability to assess technical information, evaluate product safety and efficacy, and articulate public viewpoints.
The FDA noted that it will review nominations on an ongoing basis. To secure initial consideration for current and upcoming openings, submissions for consumer representative roles must be received by November 15, 2026, while scientific and technical nominations must be submitted by November 30, 2026. Submissions received after these cutoff dates will be reviewed as subsequent vacancies emerge. Self-nominations are permitted, and selected members serve terms lasting up to four years.
