CDC’s Final 2025 Tally: 2,255 Measles Cases, the Most Since 1991

The total number of measles cases in the United States for the year 2025 stands at 2,255 confirmed cases — narrowly surpassing 1992’s total of 2,126.
That number is the most confirmed measles infections since 1991, when 9,643 cases were reported.
Historically speaking, 2025’s total cases rank as the eighth worst total in US history since 1985.
The measles virus was declared “eliminated” in the United States in the year 2000.

CDC Reporting 2,065 Confirmed Measles Cases

A total of 2,065 confirmed measles cases have been reported in the United States in 2025, according to a December 31, 2025 update by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The 2,065 cases is the most in the United States since 1992, when 2,126 cases were reported.
The 2025 total is an increase of 625% compared to 2024, when 285 cases were reported.
The CDC reports that 2,041 of the 2025 cases have been confirmed in 43 states, plus 24 cases reported among international visitors to the US.
There have been 49 outbreaks reported in 2025, and 88% of confirmed cases (1,820 of 2,065) are outbreak-associated, according to the CDC. Comparatively, 2024 had 16 outbreaks and a total of 285 cases.
The majority of cases (800) occurred in Texas, which suffered a major outbreak in January that spread to neighboring states and claimed the lives of three people, including two children.(1, 2, 3)
California, which has confirmed 25 cases, reported the death of a school-aged child in September due to an incurable brain disorder linked to previous measles infection during infancy.

National Measles Total Breaks 1,450 Cases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting a total of 1,454 confirmed measles cases, according to a September 9, 2025 update by the agency.
A total of 1,433 cases have been reported in 41 states, plus 21 cases reported among international visitors to the US, the CDC says.
There have been 37 outbreaks reported in 2025, and 86% of confirmed cases (1,249 of 1,454) are outbreak-associated, according to the CDC.
In July, cases reached their highest levels in 33 years when the CDC reported 1,309 confirmed measles cases. That’s the most measles cases since 1992, when 2,126 cases were reported.
The majority of cases have occurred in Texas, which declared its state outbreak “over” on August 18, 2025 with 762 cases.

Measles Cases at Highest Level in 33 Years

As of July 15, the CDC is reporting a total of 1,309 confirmed measles cases in the United States. That’s the most measles cases since 1992, when 2,126 cases were reported.
2025 has also surpassed the highest number of cases since measles was declared eliminated in the US in the year 2000. Prior to 2025, the year 2019 had the greatest number of cases in that time period (1,274).
According to the CDC, cases were reported by 39 states. There have been 29 outbreaks reported in 2025, and 88% of confirmed cases (1,151 of 1,309) are outbreak-associated, the agency says.

Now 21 Outbreaks of Measles in the US

Thirty-four states have reported measles infections, totaling 1,197 cases as of June 12, 2025, the CDC reports.
There have been 21 outbreaks reported in 2025, and 90% of confirmed cases (1,072 of 1,197) are outbreak-associated, the agency says.
South Dakota and Arizona became the latest states to confirm their first 2025 infections.
- The South Dakota Department of Health reported its first measles case on June 2 in an adult in Meade County who traveled internationally.
- Arizona’s Navajo County Public Health Services District (NCPHSD) and Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) confirmed four cases of measles within Navajo County on June 9. The individuals were not immunized and have a recent history of international travel. All individuals were exposed through a single source.
Nationally, measles cases continue to be driven by outbreaks in Texas (744), New Mexico (81) and Kansas (76).

Rise in Measles Cases Continues

As of May 30, the CDC is reporting a total of 1,088 confirmed measles cases in the United States, an increase of 88 cases since the agency’s May 9 update.
Cases have been identified in 32 states—Iowa and Nebraska became the latest states to confirm their first 2025 infections.
- The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services reported a confirmed case of measles in an unvaccinated adult on May 23.
- The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services reported the state’s first case of measles in eight years on May 27. The department says the patient is an “appropriately” vaccinated child with no out-of-state travel history.
Nationally, measles cases continue to be driven by outbreaks in Texas (738), New Mexico (79) and Kansas (64).

Thirty states have reported measles infections, totaling 1,001 cases as of May 9, 2025, the CDC reports.
North Dakota became the 30th state to document a measles infection this year, reporting a case on May 2 in “an unvaccinated child…who is believed to have contracted the illness from an out-of-state visitor.” The case was the state’s first since 2011. Since then, North Dakota has reported 10 additional cases.
The CDC is reporting 14 outbreaks this year, with 93% of confirmed cases (928 of 1,001) being outbreak-associated.

884 Confirmed Measles Cases Across 29 States

As of April 24, the CDC is reporting a total of 884 confirmed measles cases in 29 states—an increase of five states since the agency’s April 18 update.
Louisiana, Missouri and Virginia all reported their first 2025 cases of measles on Sunday April 20 (see Apr 20 update below). In addition, two states—Illinois and Montana—documented their first cases this week.
- The Illinois Department of Public Health reported the state’s first case on April 23. The department says the case is isolated and “is not considered an outbreak at this time.”
- Montana documented five measles cases on April 17—the state’s first cases in 35 years (1990), the state health department says. All five cases occurred in children and adults exposed to the virus while traveling outside of Montana, and all with unvaccinated/unknown vaccine status.

Three More States Report First Measles Case

Louisiana, Missouri and Virginia all reported their first 2025 cases of measles on Sunday, taking the total number of US states that have reported cases to 27 nationwide.
- Louisiana’s Department of Health notified the public of its first case of measles on April 19 in an adult whose exposure is reportedly linked to international travel.
- Missouri reported its first measles case in a child with exposure during international travel on April 19.
- Virginia reported its first case of measles on April 19, in a child who was exposed to the virus during international travel, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Outbreaks (defined as three cases or more three with a shared infection source) have been declared in nine states: California, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

United States Measles Cases Reach 712

Per an April 11 update by the CDC, confirmed measles cases in the United States have crossed 700 and now sit at 712 in a total of 24 states.
States reporting cases for the first time this week include Arkansas (2), Hawaii (1), and Indiana (6).
- Arkansas reported its first case of measles since 2018 on April 10, and a second case later that same day. Both cases, confirmed in children, were exposed to the virus during travel out of state, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.
- Hawaii’s Department of Health notified the public of its first case of measles on April 8 in an unvaccinated child who had recently returned to Oahu from international travel with its parents.
- Indiana reported its first case of measles in a child on April 7, and five additional cases on April 9 (3 children and 2 adults).
The majority of cases remain in Texas, which now has 541 confirmed cases (as of April 11).
As of April 11, a total of four states have at least 20 documented cases:
- New Mexico’s Department of Health has reported 58 cases.
- The Kansas Department of Health data reports 32 cases.

As of March 20, 2025, a total of 378 confirmed measles cases were reported by 17 states and New York City, according to the CDC’s weekly measles count.

The cases are being driven by outbreaks in Texas (309 cases), New Mexico (42) and Oklahoma (4). The CDC reports 90% of US cases are associated with these outbreaks.

Fatalities
There have been two measles-related deaths in 2025, one confirmed death of a school-aged child in Texas, and a second death under investigation in a New Mexico adult who tested positive for measles post-mortem.
