Edwards Life Sciences Corporation, Irvine, Calif, introduces the PediaSat Oximetry Catheter, a real-time, continuous ScvO2 monitoring device designed specifically for children.

The central venous catheter uses fiber optics to monitor changes in oxygen-saturation of venous blood in critically ill children. The company feels the device is a key development in monitoring technology since children typically do not demonstrate the same warning signs of potentially fatal issues as adults and can destabilize much faster than adults.
