Seoil Pacific Corp has developed the Comfort Cough II, a mechanical in-exsufflator (MI-E) created to help patients who are unable to clear bronchopulmonary secretions independently. The device is intended for patients with conditions such as muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injury, according to the company.
The system, which includes models CC20 and CC20P, stimulates a natural cough by rapidly shifting from positive pressure to negative pressure. The device uses oscillatory vibration to help clear airway secretions, the company said. Pressure settings for both inhalation and exhalation range from 0 to 70 cmH2O.
To improve patient comfort and therapy adoption, the MI-E includes a Cough Sync feature. This technology detects the patient’s breath and synchronizes the mechanical therapy with their natural respiratory cycle, according to the manufacturer. The device also offers nine presets to accommodate different patient conditions or circumstances, such as those encountered when a patient is discharged from the hospital.
Beyond standard cough stimulation, the Comfort Cough II includes a percussor mode. When used with a mask, this mode helps mobilize secretions toward the upper airway. When used with a percussion wrap, it provides high-frequency chest wall vibration therapy.
Healthcare providers can monitor clinical metrics directly through the device interface. Peak cough flow and tidal volume are displayed after each cycle, which helps clinicians determine the proper inspiratory and expiratory pressures needed for effective therapy. The CC20P model also supports a pulse oximetry kit for monitoring heart rate and oxygen saturation (SpO2) at rest, providing feedback on therapy efficacy.
Patient data is saved to an SD card and can be reviewed on a computer using the Comfort Reader software. This allows for clinical evaluation and the adjustment of therapy based on patient performance. However, the company stated that the reader software requires approval from Seoil Pacific Corp before distribution.
The hardware weighs 4.6 kg and is designed for continuous operation. Available accessories for the system include bacterial and viral filters, breathing hoses, face masks, and a foot switch.
